After securing permanent residence status in Canada, the majority of permanent residents opt for Canadian citizenship. Canadian citizenship provides the right to vote, run in elections due to the high quality of living, security and safety of citizens, and access to other government services. In addition, Canadian passport holders can travel to over 120 countries without having to obtain an entry visa.

Canadian permanent residents become eligible to apply for citizenship after meeting the requirements, such as living at least three years in Canada.

After obtaining their Permanent resident status, demonstrating language proficiency either in English or French (Exceptions in place for senior citizens), a clean criminal record etc.
